Toxin-free shopping at its best

In early November, we opened the doors to a whole new concept to retail. The concept of ‘how much old stuff can we pull out of the landfill or from our workshop and reuse to make a funky and fun new store’.

As part of the renovation, we put an extreme objective in place. One we felt was paramount to our core purpose of removing toxins from the world. The vision for this store is that it is a completely toxin-free and earth-friendly environment. In a world full of toxic laquers, paints, finishings and furniture…hows THAT for a challenge?

We made resolution early in the planning stages to avoid a ‘red-list’ of the toxins typically found in the construction of a store. Every material we used is toxin-free and either reusable, reclaimed, recyclable or compostable. We also wanted to make sure that no parts of the store will ever end up in a landfill, after all, we’d literally just pulled some parts of the store OUT of the landfill.

We had fun scrounging up materials such as reclaimed wood from a barn in Manitoba, amber glass beer bottles for light fixtures, and ingredient containers such as tin olive oil cans  and drums which were given new life as eco-chic chandeliers. We searched for antiques to use for cabinetry, and avoided virgin flooring, we just diamond ground the concrete floor that was already there. We also dug a hole down through the store floor and into the soil below to make home for a beautiful fig tree which we’ve affectionately dubbed ‘The Lorax’. American Clay on the walls and the living wall at the rear of the store help to purify the air while the living wall on the store-front adds a festive and natural header with its red berries and evergreen seedlings.

We invite you to come visit this ‘new/old’ store to enjoy a completely worry-free shopping experience. We’ve had some comments that most newly renovated stores have a toxic ‘paint-fumey’ scent, but ours didn’t have a smell at all. That is until we moved in about two million tonnes of soap. We’d so love to hear what you think the next time you’re in for a visit! Write to us at info@rockymountainsoap.com.

3 women of the desert, to learning much inclined,
Went to see the queen (though all of them were blind)
That each by observation, might satisfy her mind
And find the source of youthful skin that came so hard to find

She is very soft said one, with her hand the queen’s skin felt
She is fragrant as a garden said the other as she smelt
Silly ladies anyone can see, said the final one with glee
She’s found that creamy nectar that’s within reach of you and me

… inspired by ‘The Blind Men and the Elephant’ by Saxe…and body butter.

Salt vs Sugar

sugar-salt-lOur new scrubs have been out for two weeks now, and wow have we ever gotten some love from you guys about them!  Here’s one of my favorites:

Just tried the new sugar scrubs and they are so fantastic! I purchased the lavender and the bamboo kind, but I may need to stop by to pick up the orange one as well!  Stellar job on the R&D side – its not too greasy and the grains don’t hurt while scrubbing. The smells are to die for! They are so indulgent, I can hardly wait for my next shower!

Wow, thanks!  We’re so glad you love them!

I’ve had a few people ask what the difference is between a sugar scrub (like our Lavender or Blood Orange scrubs) and a salt scrub (like our Bamboo).

Salt is great for softening both the water and your skin and provides a more vigorous scrub.  Sugar, while gentler than salt also has some benefit because the AHA’s it contains are great for revealing fresh dewy skin and making it glow.  Sugar also won’t sting if you’re clutzy with your razor (ahem).

That said…it really boils down to what you prefer.  I tend to use the the sugar scrubs on almost a daily basis to keep my skin from drying out, but I use the Bamboo scrub (which contains salt) when I need a good strong exfoliation, usually once a week or so.

I’d love to hear which one you prefer, so far the numbers are telling us it’s neck and neck!

Do You Have Fragile Nails?

cuticlebutter I came back from lunch to a very quiet office, Red and I were the only two people clacking away on our keyboards.  Out of the blue I hear her say, ‘Do you want a story for your website?’

It would be nice if you could hear her tell it yourself, she’s from Ireland and has the loveliest accent (and red hair, hence the nickname), but the story is the important part.  She enthusiastically explained that she has had soft nails that tear really easily for pretty much her whole life.  She started using our Cuticle Butter two weeks ago and her nails are firm, long and healthy looking.  I know, I saw and felt em’!

So  for those of you who suffer from soft nails that rip and tear easily, Red has been using it for only two weeks and already she’s “so impressed”.  She dabs the butter, which is quite soft, at the base of each nail.  Then rubs it into her cuticle, and then massages each finger out from the base to bring blood and nutrients towards her fingertips.  The blend of Vitamin E, comfrey oil, and myrrh keep nails supple but strong.

I love when people from our staff  tell me about successes they’ve had with our products.  Everyone seems to have at least one that made a difference in their lives.  Please feel free to share yours too!

1800645We’re typically a company that sticks with ‘safe’.  Our products are 100% natural.  I never drop f-bombs (although there is a first time for everything).  During our Winter Celebration Party we went tubing… and wore helmets.  For Valentine’s Day last year we put together a giftset filled with foot products and called it ‘Tickle Her Toes’.  Cute.  And safe.

So this year, we’re dipping a toe into the unknown and venturing into the ‘risque’ with the messaging on our giftsets.   If you come  into our stores or go online for a Valentine’s Day giftset, you’ll see her front and centre, and you’ll notice her not so bawdy sister…’Love. Love. Love.”  Just for you Beatles fans.

Why the duality?  Well, we had an internal debate about these sets (as we do with most things) and the vote was split down the middle so we produced both and decided to let you tell us which one you like.

I worked in the Calgary store last thursday and made sure to ask around.  The feedback was unanimous.  People loved “I’ll Wash yours If You Wash Mine”.  Mind you…they were mostly dudes.

Want to help shape the direction of future messages from us?  Which is your favorite?

Good-Bye Berry Body Butter

lastberryAll good things must come to an end, or so they say.  And so it has come time to say good-bye to our Berry Body Butter.  Here you can view our last one in the Canmore store.  And to pay our respects, an obituary:

Berry Body Butter 2000-2010

Born in Canmore, Alberta to Mr.Cocoa Butter & Mrs.Berry Scent

2000 – Hits the shelves sporting a synthetic berry scent.

2003 – Changed the berry scent from synthetic to natural to hold true to our directive to be 100% natural.  It wasn’t quite as popular as the synthetic berry smell (where have we seen that before…hmmm…vanilla maybe?).

2006 – Changed to an alternate but still 100% natural Berry scent.  The berry butter was even less popular after that.  Sigh.

2010 – After a long, slow struggle to compete with it’s much more popular siblings Lemongrass, Lavender and Unscented (!), Berry finally gives up the ghost.

RIP BBB

Epsom Salt Experiment

soreI overdid it at the gym on wednesday.  Which means my back, butt and hamstrings complain every time I stand up, sit down, walk, bend over, and move about in general.  So, after sitting in a steaming tub full of epsom salts and experiencing three noticeable benefits I was curious to learn about how the salt works.

First, the benefits:  1. The very reason I got into the tub in the first place was noticeably diminished.  No my butt wasn’t smaller, it was just less sore.  The stiffness wasn’t completely gone, but it had definitely improved.  2. My sinuses felt like they’d been blasted clean by Indoor Plumber, that’s because my salt had essential oils in it (marjoram and lemongrass to be precise).  And 3.  I was exceedingly pink.  This might not seem to be a benefit to you, but take it from someone who eats a lot of carrots – it’s better than yellow.

Second, the how: In my efforts to find some scientific explanation of how the salts helped me, I found…well, almost nothing.  What I did find was an unpublished study showing that magnesium sulfate (the salt) enters the body when bathing.  But I couldn’t find anything on how the salt actually makes the muscles feel better.  What I do know is that magnesium is necessary for proper muscle function, and helps heal micro-tears in the muscle, which is what soreness is.  I’m not a chemist – but does it seem too far fetched that the magnesium in the salt would act the same way magnesium in a supplement does?

What I experienced was what I expected and hoped for – so was it a placebo effect?  I don’t know.  But I do know that I can stand up without whimpering, I can breathe clearly (a nicely unexpected side effect), and I’m a pleasant pinkish hue – until my next salad.

If your muscles are stiff and sore, give Epsom salts a try.  I’d be most intrigued to hear your conclusions.  I’ll even send the first person to post a reply (mom, you don’t count) a free packet of Sore Muscle salts to try.
