“Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the enormous progress that has been made towards equality. I am passionate about playing my part in that journey by creating opportunities, building louder voices, and ensuring that safety and support for women continues. The power of being in a room full of women is something to behold.”

- Karina Birch, Co-owner and CEO, Rocky Mountain Soap Company

March 8 is International Women’s Day. It’s a moment to celebrate the hard-working, inspiring women in your life. Over a century old, International Women’s Day is a touchstone for women’s rights and equality. In honour of this day, we’ve put together 5 simple ways to celebrate women and equality.

Support a women or girl’s organisation

This could be by donation, volunteering your time, or signing up for an event. Over the years we’ve loved supporting organisations like Fast & Female, that keeps girls in sport, and we started our annual Women’s Run & Walk to raise money for keeping women and girls in sport and leading healthy, active lives.

Take part in the Choose to Challenge

If you notice women sharing images of their hand raised, it's most likely part of the Choose to Challenge, a sign of solidarity to support equality on International Women's Day. Learn More.

Pick up a book by a female author. Here’s a list of books by Canadian female authors to get you going!

Support a female-run business

Did you know that women-founded startups are 63 per cent less likely to receive venture capital funding than those led by men, according to research from Columbia and London Business School? Support businesses owned by women, it could be as simple as buying a cup of coffee from a female-owned coffee shop.

Catch a flick

Much like reading a book from a female author, you can easily take in a movie helmed by a female filmmaker. Here’s a list of 18 Canadian women filmmakers to get you started.

Write a thank you note

Why not write a simple thank you note to a woman (or women) that inspires you? It takes almost no time at all and it feels so good to let someone know they’ve had an impact on you.
